12/2/2018 1 Comment Princess Mononoke (1997)If someone were to ask me, "what are some of the themes of a Miyazaki film. I would show them this one. It is so textbook of 2 of his most important themes, his love of nature and his feeling about war. It captures both to bring together a captivating story with fun characters, an gorgeous world, and an unbelievable story. The animation in this movie is incredible. There is a montage where Ashitaga is travelling west across the world. In these scenes, Miyazaki is showing off how talented he is with animation. These moments are breath taking and capture you in to this amazing world. The story is really cool and easy to follow. Miyazaki also does a really good job of making stories. Another underrated thing Miyazaki does is making great and strong female characters. These female characters are my favorite parts like Princess Mononoke and the leader of Iron Town. Those two characters are great and deserve to be seen more. The music in this movie is beautiful. I think it is another great way Miyazaki captures you into the film. It always matches the tempo of the movie which all good movies do well. This of course is no exception to that rule. This is a strange Miyazaki movie in the sense that it is way more violent than the rest of them. In this one, arms get blown off, heads shot off by arrows, innocent people getting murdered by the samurai. It is crazy but I kind of like it. I think it adds to the darker feel this movie gives off. I really love it I think this is going into my top 5 honestly. Maybe even in my top 2 9.7/10
