12/2/2018 1 Comment Princess Mononoke (1997)If someone were to ask me, "what are some of the themes of a Miyazaki film. I would show them this one. It is so textbook of 2 of his most important themes, his love of nature and his feeling about war. It captures both to bring together a captivating story with fun characters, an gorgeous world, and an unbelievable story. The animation in this movie is incredible. There is a montage where Ashitaga is travelling west across the world. In these scenes, Miyazaki is showing off how talented he is with animation. These moments are breath taking and capture you in to this amazing world. The story is really cool and easy to follow. Miyazaki also does a really good job of making stories. Another underrated thing Miyazaki does is making great and strong female characters. These female characters are my favorite parts like Princess Mononoke and the leader of Iron Town. Those two characters are great and deserve to be seen more. The music in this movie is beautiful. I think it is another great way Miyazaki captures you into the film. It always matches the tempo of the movie which all good movies do well. This of course is no exception to that rule. This is a strange Miyazaki movie in the sense that it is way more violent than the rest of them. In this one, arms get blown off, heads shot off by arrows, innocent people getting murdered by the samurai. It is crazy but I kind of like it. I think it adds to the darker feel this movie gives off. I really love it I think this is going into my top 5 honestly. Maybe even in my top 2 9.7/10

11/26/2018 1 Comment Porco RossoIt is time to talk about another Miyazaki movie. This one is a little lesser known and in my opinion very underrated. It is one of my favorite movies for is realistic timeline. Except the main Character is a pig. This week will be about Porco Rosso. So the character of Porco Rosso is one of my favorites in Miyazaki Film. He is really complex character and I love his story. He is kind of the classic rough and tough guy on the inside but a really sweet, kind, and self-sacrificing man. Most of the main character in Studio Ghibli are innocent and children. This movie is different because they have this older man who has seen the horrors of this world. It is cool to try new things even though you have been successful with a different formula. I think the experiment was great. In the background of this movie, the Italian government is becoming its facist from under Mussolini. I enjoy the historical aspect of this movie. It affects the movie and the people how it affected people in the real world. Curtis kind of reminds me of Trump. He is a stereotypical american. He reminds me of Trump because how he treats women, his sense of he deserves more, he becomes a Hollywood Star, arrogant, and he wants to be president. Not to mention his first name is Donald. He is a good character though and has a sweet heart. I must say this movie is very beautiful to look at. Miyazaki is one of the best animators out there. This movie is fun, funny, action packed, and beautiful. I really love it 8.9/10 11/12/2018 1 Comment The Lodger (1927)The Lodger: A Story of the London Fog is a love story with murder and suspense in the background. The story is very simple and easy to follow along. A man rents a room and the young girl who also lives at the house falls in love with him. However, he might be a killer. Silent movies take a lot of energy to stay engaged with and story is so boring. It was hard to focus. The story for me was kind of predictable and I had a feeling what the ending was and that happened. I wasn’t satisfied with the movie. I thought the movie was going to be about a murder investigation and that wasn’t the case. There was no true villain and the conflict did not feel very real. The movie had some good music though. I really liked the music and when the music was good I felt very engaged. I thought the main girl, Daisy, was kind of dumb. She basically cheated on her boyfriend with no precautions. I really feel bad for her the boyfriend, Joe. He is a good person and he didn’t deserve what happened to him. Even in the end he was a great person and helped the young couple. 11/11/2018 1 Comment Spirited Away (2001)Honestly, what can I say here? By all accounts, this is one of the most legendary animated movies of all time. Welcome to the most well know Miyazaki Movie ever made. Let this begin my long journey of Miyazaki Reviews. Like all Miyazaki movies, the world created for these movies are wonderous and leave you in awe. These universes have endless possibilities. The magic and the supernatural are really turned up in this movie. I'm not really into the supernatural but I really love this. As a kid, how can you not feel like this is the coolest thing to ever grace your tv screen. It completely takes you out of reality. I feel that is what Miyazaki does the best, takes you away from the ordinary world. One strange thing after another keeps happening. You keep watching and your reaction is "what the heck? what's going on?" It is so fun. The story is fun and it cool in the fact that it shows a cool metaphor that I didn't really see till now. We grow up fast. Chihiro grows so fast in a matter of days in the strange world but only matter of moments in the ordinary world. It is crazy because in seconds we can completely change. I love the message. Now even though this is the most famous Miyazaki movie, it is not my favorite. It is a little to far from reality for me but its good. I wish it had more reality. STILL A FANTASTIC MOVIE. SO BEAUTIFUL AND IT ALWAYS MAKES ME SMILE BY THE END. 9.3/10 11/5/2018 1 Comment Thor Ragnarok
10/28/2018 1 Comment Seven (1995)10/22/2018 0 Comments 10 Cloverfield Lane (2016)I have seen this movie before but I wanted to write about it because it is very underrated in my opinion. Without a doubt the best Cloverfield movie. Also one of the better thrillers in the past 10 years. This movie didn't get a lot of media attention and it deserves more credit. The movie did a great job with its suspense and action. The last scene when the girl is trying to escape is an amazing sequence of events. John Goodman's character going crazy and chasing her was so awesome. Speaking of John Goodman, I think he did a really good job in this movie. I'm so use to john Goodman playing these nice and friendly characters. For me he is Sully from Monster INC. In this ,movie he is a monster. Just the worst person imaginable. It strange because by the end of the movie you sympathize with him a little bit. The entire movie he was saying outside is dangerous and he was right. He was crazy, don't get me wrong but he was absolutely correct. If he wasn't so crazy there would be no movie I guess. The twist is really fun and I was blown away the first time I saw it.Thinking back now it may have been predictable because of the title. The Girl goes under a cool change while being underground. She turns from running away from your problems and now she faces them. I love that message and I think it is accurate. Overall I would give this movie an 8.7/10. So awesome and worth the time 10/14/2018 1 Comment Robocop (1987)Ending my last first quarter journal with a movie which some consider a classic action film, Robocop. This movie is a classic one for a reason. It is a very good movie and I enjoyed myself very much. I like the simple story to the film, a murdered cop gets turned into a robot and is used to fight crime in a futuristic Detroit. Robocop is awesome. I forgot what an original robot was thought to be like back in the 80's. Today, robots have so many forms and uses. Robocop is a stereotype that I love and miss. Robocop has sight humor to him. Like when he throws Clarence through 4 different windows. There is no need for it but it made me laugh because it was so over the top. Speaking of Clarence, he was a really well acted and enjoyable. The female cop was awesome! A strong female character that doesn't go over the top. She cool, fun, and kicks butt. The movie's setting was fantastic and I loved to see what people thought the future was going to look like. Acting was solid over all. The camera work was cool like when they are about to reveal Robocop and they show you a glimpse on other tvs. That was awesome. A couple of things I didn't like CGI. Oh my lord was that not good looking. Also, I enjoyed the action but sometimes the gore was a little over the top. Like when that guy runs into the toxic waste then gets hit by a car. Just a bit over the top. Cool concept and fun movie. 8.6/10 10/7/2018 1 Comment No Country for Old Men (2007)Who in the world knew that a bowl cut would turn out to be so scary. My film teacher showed us a video and this movie was featured in that video. It dawned on me that this movie was on Netflix so I decided to give it a chance. I sat down and watched some of the best acting and suspense I have ever seen in a movie. I loved how brave and different this movie turned out. (spoiler) They kill the main character of the movie! how many movies can pull that off!? I was flabbergasted by the beauty in this movie. I never thought I would be so impressed with the looks of the Texas desert. Stunning
My lord was the acting in this movie absolutely incredible. The acting by Javier Bardem was so crazy good. He plays a psychopathic killer who is hunting the main character who is played by Josh Brolin. Bardem played this character so well. The suspense in this movie is amazing but actors who great at dramatic acting take in to a entire different level. There is a scene were Bardem's character Anton is in a store talking to the owner. The sound is almost gone and all you can see is the acting. That scene is absolutely brilliant and is now my favorite scene in any movie I have ever watched. I have watched that. Not only that but this movie was the perfect amount of violence for me. The action was not tons of cuts but suspenseful. I could gush over how much I liked this movie! I wish I watched this movie earlier in my life! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BqMdQBox15s This has made it into my top 5 list. 9.5/10 10/4/2018 1 Comment The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari 1920After watching this movie, I realize thriller dramas are so much harder to make without speech and sound. It takes a lot out of the movie. Even then, I enjoyed the movie quite a bit. It was so strange and weird. The plot was kinda interesting and brings up pretty interesting moral question. Is someone guilty of murder if they don't know if they are doing it
It's a classic German film. German films make you think about what is true. Thrillers make you think and tense. This movie does that very well. I felt tense in this movie and I really like that. It is a good movie for it's time. I think the fact that this movie is a silent film takes away from the potential of this movie. They did remake it but I'm not sure if it had dialogue. Either way, that remake did not do very well. I don't know, i really just don't like silent movies. I can see why it is so highly praised. 6.5/10 |
